Blizzard is mulling about almost the unthinkable for them. A free to play Starcraft 2 multiplayer? Impossibru! (insert meme face here)
But lead designer of SC2 Dustin Browder has been hinting exactly that; a future wherein we all get to play the multiplayer portion of Starcraft 2, with no cost at all. Spotted at the Valencia eSports Congress, Bowder admitted on a speaker's panel that Blizzard is looking at that option, but they don't exactly know how to make money from that kind of business model.
Dustin Browder also said, “We don’t know how we would monetise it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.”
I have not played any Starcraft 2 multiplayer, but I imagine it will be hard to catch up with all the veterans of the game. Having a free to play option will be a great way for newbies like me to get into the game, without shelling out hard-earned bucks.
